DW_Historical banners

Some time ago, mod livii okayed that I could produce art for this ficathon, provided they could be used as banners/headers for the community. I wanted to do ten different pieces of art, for all ten Doctors and using ten of your lovely prompts. That proved more of a challenge than I anticipated! I decided to focus in on the three drawings that were most complete after new year's and just post those.

For tigerkat24, who prompted The Doctor and some of history's more famous disappearances. I chose Amelia Earhart getting a lift from One, Dodo, and Steven.

For stunt_muppet, who prompted There's a good reason the Maschinenmensch prop from Metropolis went missing after filming: it was a new-model Cyberman, stranded on Earth. Our Heroes (originally written with Four, Sarah, and Harry) must find it before it wrecks havoc on 1920s Berlin. I tried to make this one look a bit like a movie poster. Those are actual buildings in the Berlin skyline that were around in the '20s.

For brewsternorth, who prompted Assorted Doctors and companions, solo or in a group, drop in on the Algonquin Round Table over the course of (from the Circle's POV) one month. I drew my inspiration from Al Hirschfeld's caricature of the group. From left to right, I have included Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley, and Alexander Woollcott. (Since the original image is from the 1960s, I imagine Hirschfeld drew Six and Mel from photographs or description.)

I had a lot of fun creating these, and I hope to finish the other seven some day! I hope you enjoy them. Comments and constructive criticism are appreciated.
Because the post was too long and LJ complained.

NotesCollapse )
Not actually for the Ficathon, but it's Doctor Who (albeit with a dash of Torchwood) and it is very, very historical.

Title: The Winter of Our Discontent, Part I: This Sun of York
Authors: lareinenoire and rosamund
Summary: Something is rotten in the state of England...and it's not just the heads mounted above the gates of York. Can the Doctor and Jack solve the mystery and, even more importantly, can they sober up in a land without safe drinking water?
Rating: PG13 for language and thematic material
Wordcount (Part I): 11,202 (including footnotes)
Warnings (for all three parts): Some violence, drunkenness, Jack Harkness behaving like Jack Harkness, implied debauchery, implied slash, bad chronicle jokes, very bad Shakespeare jokes, and possibly educational footnotes.
Disclaimer: Jack, the Doctor, and the TARDIS belong to RTD. Everybody else has been dead long enough that they really shouldn't care.
Notes: Set between the end of the third series of Doctor Who ('The Last of the Time Lords') and the beginning of the second series of Torchwood ('Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang'). Sadly, the footnotes needed to go into a separate post due to length -- they are HERE. This fic would not have existed without angevin2 and her insistence that there needed to be more fic involving Plantagenets, and many thanks for beta-reading! And thank you so much to speak_me_fair for the gorgeous banner!

Somehow--and Jack had only the very haziest memories of anything within the past twenty-four hours--they had lost the TARDIS.Collapse )

Part II: The Devil Went Down to Anjou
PART III: My Kingdom for a Doctor
Title: Discussion on the Subject of Differing Governmental Systems (Or When the Doctor Wanted to Argue with John Adams Just Because he Could)
Author: sunnyrea
Pairing(s)/Character(s): 10th Doctor, Jack, Martha, Mr. and Mrs. John Adams
Rating: PG
Word Count: 1,135
Warning(s): Nothing!
Prompt: John Adams and the Doctor get into a bickering contest whilst Abigail Adams and companions get on with the real work. (Basically I just want to see the Adamses. Feel free to twist this prompt however you like.)
Author's notes: I had some fun with the research on this, put some of my history degree to good use for once. I put some of my sources at the bottom if anyone is interested in reading more about John Adams' political writings.
Disclaimer: I do not own any of Doctor Who; I am not making any money off of this story at all!

Discussion on the Subject of Differing Governmental Systems (Or When the Doctor Wanted to Argue with John Adams Just Because he Could)

(I hope the prompt writer enjoyed what I came up with because it was certainly fun to write!)

Doctor Who Historical Fic-Fest

We have already got several lovely contributions. Please let your stories keep coming...!

Fallacy Somewhere

Title: Fallacy Somewhere (Or: If You Can't Steal a Coat from Gilbert and Sullivan, Then From Which 19th Century Librettists and Composers Can You Steal a Coat?)
Author: dbskyler
Word count:3,223
Pairings / Characters: Doctors One through Thirteen, Susan, Jamie, Jo, Romana, Tegan, Nyssa, Ace, Grace, Rose, Jack, Donna, and of course, Sir W.S. Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan.
Rating: G
Warnings: A little mad and generally silly.
Spoilers: None
Prompt: How exactly did One end up with Gilbert and Sullivan's coat?
Summary: You know, I acquired that ulster from Gilbert and Sullivan. -- The First Doctor, “Edge of Destruction.”
A/N: My very first ficfest entry ever, and I have no idea if anyone else will like this but I had a blast!
Disclaimer: This is a work of fan fiction, offered freely. Doctor Who and all Doctor Who characters belong to the BBC. Gilbert and Sullivan's operettas are in the public domain, joyous rapture!

EDIT 12/7 I've just discovered that I mixed up the order of G&S' last two shows -- "Utopia Limited" was next-to-last, and "The Grand Duke" was last. I've corrected it, but that does mean that some very nice people who left me comments are now referencing the wrong show. Sorry about that -- I obviously fail at research!

Break for a Beat

Title: Break for a Beat
Author: sunnyrea
Pairing(s)/Character(s): 8th Doctor and Romana
Rating: PG
Word Count: 1,556
Warning(s): Nothing!
Prompt: An early Beatles' performance at the Cavern Club: the crush of the crowd, the excitement in the air, the four boys in mop-tops playing their hearts out. A Doctor and/or companion(s) get swept up in the excitement (and possibly kiss a mop-top or two?) About any character would be awesome.
Author's notes: I rather enjoyed writing this! I haven't written Romana before and was quite glad to put her in here. All in all I think it went rather well!
Disclaimer: I do not own any of Doctor who, I am not making any money off of this story at all!

Rules for claiming a prompt:

    * Claiming begins tomorrow, on November 2nd, at 12:00 EST (i.e. noon). Any attempts to claim one before that are invalid. There will be another post tomorrow to remind you of the official start of the prompting period.

    * First come, first served.

    * Two people can claim the same prompt, but not more. There are so many different suggestions with great story ideas that it would be a pity to waste them all.

    * Please avoid claiming your own prompts. It's not strictly forbidden, but it's more fun the other way, innit?

    * If you finish and post your fic before the deadline on Saturday, December 6th, you may go back and claim another, unused, prompt. Or a third one, or a fourth one, if you're a very prolific author.

    * Please read the rules and guidelines before writing.
